Tom Watson Commits to 2007 Bank of America Championship
For Immediate Release, Jan. 11, 2007:
CONCORD, Mass. – With 39 PGA TOUR and eight Champions Tour victories to his credit, Tom Watson will compete this year, for the first time in the tournament’s history, at twenty-seventh annual Bank of America Championship at Nashawtuc Country Club, June 18-24, 2007.
“Our goal is always to field the best Champions Tour golfers each year for the Bank of America Championship,” said tournament director Tracy West. “We welcome Watson’s first-ever commitment to the tournament this year not only because he’s a fan favorite, but also because his commitment shows us that high caliber Champions Tour players continue to consider the Bank of America Championship a premier event where they can expect enthusiastic fans, a high level of competition and a challenging venue.”
Other early player commitments to this year’s Bank of America Championship include Allen Doyle, the tournament’s 2003 winner, Craig Stadler, its 2004 champion, Dana Quigley, the Champions Tour’s 2005 leading money winner and holder of the record for most consecutive Tour starts (278), Jim Thorpe, who placed second in 2000 and tied for third in 2002 at the Bank of America Championship, 11-time PGA TOUR victor Andy Bean and Champions Tour rookie Chip Beck, who is eligible for the Bank of America Championship for the first time this year and who last year finished in the top five in four of his five appearances on the Champions Tour.
Watson joined the Champions Tour in 1999 and has won eight times, including four majors, the Senior PGA Championship, JELD-WEN Tradition and two Senior British Opens. On the PGA TOUR, Watson’s 39 victories include eight majors. He won two Masters, five British Opens and the U.S. Open. He was named Player of the Year six times, one short of Tiger Woods’ seven, won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average three consecutive times and the 1987 Bob Jones Award, the highest recognition of the U.S. Golf Association. He became a World Golf Hall of Famer in 1988.
The Bank of America Championship is the longest running 54-hole event on the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour and the only Champions Tour tournament played in New England. The tournament has contributed more than $4.5 million to local non-profits like Emerson Hospital and Boys and Girls Club of Assabet Valley over the past 26 years.
