2008 Bank of America Championship issues annual call for volunteers

For Immediate Release, March 5, 2008:

CONCORD, MA — Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Bank of America Championship, the PGA TOUR’s official Champions Tour event, according to tournament director Tracy West.

“Without our nearly 1,500 volunteers, who donate their time and energy simply because they’re so in love with the game of golf and with helping our community, we could not produce an event that for nearly three decades has been so beneficial to local charitable organizations,” she said.

The tournament is issuing its annual call for volunteers, who can sign up easily by visiting www.bankofamericachampionship.com and clicking on the “Volunteer” button at the top of the website’s home page. Volunteer opportunities are available on more than 30 committees. Examples include transportation, fairway and greenside laser operators, corporate partner services, scoring command, spectator services and marshals. Any potential volunteer who doesn’t have a computer can call the tournament office at 978-266-0266 for information and an application.

In addition to being closer to the game than anyone else on the course, Bank of America Championship volunteers receive a package that comprises uniform, tickets, meal vouchers and the like at a cost much lower than the package’s value. This year, volunteers have a choice of three packages.

Premium Volunteer Package

  • Golf shirt
  • Outerwear piece (or a second shirt, or a round of golf at Stow Acres CC)
  • Baseball hat, visor or straw hat (straw hat $6 extra)
  • Volunteer parking pass
  • Volunteer badge for event entry all week
  • Lunch vouchers on workdays
  • Five good-any-day tickets
  • Invitation to the volunteer party
  • Subscription to GOLF MAGAZINE

Standard Volunteer Package

  • Golf shirt
  • Baseball hat or visor
  • Volunteer parking pass
  • Volunteer badge for event entry all week
  • Lunch vouchers on workdays
  • Invitation to the volunteer party
  • Subscription to GOLF MAGAZINE

Youth Volunteer Package (available to 14-17-year-old volunteer standard bearer, leaderboard and scoring runner committees)

  • Tournament t-shirt
  • Baseball hat
  • Volunteer badge for event entry all week
  • Lunch vouchers on workdays
  • Invitation to the volunteer party

The value of the Premium Volunteer Package is more than $330, and the cost to the volunteer is $60. The Standard Volunteer Package is $35, and the Youth Volunteer Package is $10. The fees for these volunteer packages not only defray the cost of the uniform, but also help the tournament contribute the maximum possible to local charities.

Volunteers over the past 27 years, by contributing hundreds of thousands of hours to the tournament, have helped make possible contributions totaling more than $4.8 million to local charities such as Emerson Hospital, Hanscom Air Force Base-Quality of Life Fund, Boys and Girls Club of Assabet Valley; The First Tee of Massachusetts, The Genesis Fund, Concord-Carlisle Athletic Boosters, Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, Greater Waltham Association for Retarded Citizens and Lincoln-Sudbury Athletic Boosters. More than 50 local charities received at total of $377,500 from last year’s tournament alone.

The twenty-eighth annual Bank of America Championship, an official event on the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour and one of only two professional golf tournaments in New England, will again this year field 78 of the top names in golf, including several playing in their first Bank of America Championship, like Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, John Cook and Wayne Grady. They will compete against top pros already on the early commit list like Allen Doyle, Bob Gilder, Jay Haas, Jerry Pate, Nick Price, Tom Purtzer, Dana Quigley, Craig Stadler and Jim Thorpe.

The 2008 Bank of America Championship takes place June 16-22 at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord. The tournament is the longest running 54-hole event on the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour and the only Champions Tour tournament played in New England. Tournament information is available at www.bankofamericachampionship.com.
