2005 BANK OF AMERICA CHAMPIONSHIP
1ST Round Notes
- With his 6-under-par 66, Leonard Thompson posted his low round
of the 2005 season. In addition, his one-stroke lead over Mark
McNulty, John Harris, Walter Hall and Tom McKnight marked the first
time in his Champions Tour career he has held sole possession of the
first-round lead. He had previously been tied for the lead on three
occasions, most recently at the 2003 Emerald Coast Classic near
Pensacola, FL.
Fastest start of the day probably goes to Bruce Summerhays, who opened
with an eagle-3 on his opening hole (No. 10. Summerhays drained an
8-iron from 121 yards for his third eagle of the year.
- Dana Quigley’s impressive streak continued on Friday when he made his
276th consecutive start for which he was eligible and his 262nd straight
start overall. This is the event Quigley began his streak in 1997
(8/1/97) when he open qualified and finished T6. He won in his next
start at the Northville Long Island Classic.
- Quigley fired a 4-under-par 68, his fifth straight round in the 60s.
In his last 22 rounds, Quigley has had 12 rounds in the 60s and only two
of those 22 rounds have been over par.
- Defending champion Craig Stadler opened with an even-par 72 and is
T34.
- The most difficult hole was No. 11 with an average score of 4.256
(-.256). There were just four birdies. The hole also yielded 22 bogeys
and one double bogey.
- Toughest hole to make a birdie? It was the par-3, 13th which yielded
just one birdie – Jim Albus.
- Easiest hole of the day was No. 5 with an average score of 4.628
(-.372). There was one eagle and 34 birdies.
- A total of 33 players finished under par and 16 more posted even-par
scores in the 78-man field. The field averaged 71.756. A year ago the
first-round scoring average was 71.359.
- Bruce Summerhays is the first-round leader in the Georgia-Pacific
Grand Champions at 3-under-par 69. He leads Hale Irwin by one stroke.
- Ed Dougherty made another nice showing with a 4-under-par 68. After
posting just one top-25 finish in his first eight starts this year,
Dougherty has finished T14 and T22 in his last two starts and five of
his last six rounds have been below par. This is his first full season
back on the Champions Tour after missing parts of the previous two
seasons with a right shoulder injury which required surgery in October,
2003. After joining the Champions Tour in 1999, Dougherty has won twice.
